Q. Does Zen Do Kai and MBS Centre offer real self defence training or is the style more focused on sports martial arts?
A. Zen Do Kai has never really been about sport. It is generally a highly effective system of self defence that was originally developed for pub bouncers. The techniques are therefore tried and proven to work in real life scenarios. MBS Centre have taken the style of Zen Do Kai and complimented it with an array of additional Mixed Martial Arts techniques to create a truly holistic system of self defence. This is therefore not really a sport, it's real life, street aware self defence.
Q. I have trained before in Zen Do Kai. Can I keep my previous rank?
A. Absolutely. Simply bring along your last grading certificate to confirm your rank and naturally you will be able to continue your training at that rank. Before progressing to your next grading however, you will need to demonstrate knowledge of the required skills for that level.
Q. Do I need a uniform to start training?
A. No. We do generally ask that for Zen Do Kai you have acquired a Gi (uniform) before you attempt your first grading, however we do not expect anyone to purchase a Gi until they are convinced that they wish to continue training in Zen Do Kai.
Q. I have a permanent injury or disability. Does that exclude me from training?
A. Absolutely not. You should explain your situation to your instructor and they will make sure your training is modified to suit you. You may be asked to obtain a medical clearance depending on the circumstances. MBS Centre does not discriminate in any way against people with illness, injury or disabilities and we encourage everyone to enjoy the many benefits our training can provide.
Q. What protective equipment do I need to purchase?
A. Depending on the class, some may be required. Please just talk to our friendly instructors.
Q. Do I need my own protection equipment to commence training with MBS Centre?
A. No. We do have a stock of “used” hand mitts for use by new students. It is however recommended that students do purchase their own equipment if they intend to continue their training.
Q. What do I need to bring for my first class?
A. Students coming for their first class should bring a water bottle and a towel. Wear comfortable loose fitting clothes that you can easily move about in. Also bring a smile and an open mind. Your first class can be daunting but it should also be fun.
Q. Does MBS Centre have a good retention rate of students?
A. Definitely, We have over 15 home grown Black Belts that have been training with us for years. Our club has a great atmosphere that encourages people to keep coming back.
Q. Are women welcome to train at MBS Centre?
A. Of course. We encourage women of all ages to come and train. We believe that in today's society, all women should train in some form of self defence. We have had women of all ages training with us and have successfully graded women to Black Belt in our club.
Q. Does MBS Centre participate in tournaments?
A. No not generally. Zen Do Kai is not really a style that participates in tournaments as its techniques are geared toward street savvy self defence.
Q. Is it expensive to train with MBS Centre?
A. Not at all. We believe that MBS Centre offers exceptional value for money training. MBS Centre is operated as a genuine not-for-profit club with any surplus proceeds being put back into the club for the member's benefits. It is our understanding that our cost structure is far cheaper than any gym membership.
Q. I have young Children? What is the minimum age that a child can commence training in the kids classes?
A. Because every child is different, we don't actually specify a minimum age. As long as the child is able to get a benefit from the classes and enjoy the experience ... without being a disruption to the class.
Q. I still have questions. Am I able to contact someone to speak with about my queries or concerns?
A. Of course. Please contact us on Facebook Messenger
